LIMB: Rethinking Heavy Timber Joinery Through Analysis of Tree Crotches
MY ROLES
research assistant, designer, drafter, photogrammetry specialist, CNC operator

CONTRIBUTIONS
+ sourced and salvaged discarded bifurcated logs from felled trees in East Michigan
+ designed laser-cut modeling kit and built structural study models with it
+ photographed and cataloged all salvaged tree crotch bifurcations
+ used a photogrammetry program to map surfaces of each bifurcation and convert to 3D model.
+ milled wooden joints from tree bifurcations on 5-axis CNC machine
+ produced and cataloged photographic documentation
+ designed LIMB logo, graphic elements, two posters
+ produced illustrations and animations for exhibition
+ wrote abstract and designed poster for conference
+ helped assemble LIMB quarter-dome installation.

RESULT
Full-scale model built. Installation at the University of Michigan's Liberty Annex.
